What Is Psychological Counseling?

Counseling is used to promote mental and physical health. Nine out of ten Americans surveyed by Consumer Reports said that professional counseling helped them. Counseling helps you look objectively at behaviors, feelings and thoughts in situations that one finds troublesome. It can be effective in helping you make the changes you want to make.

Individual, group, marriage or family sessions are some of the approaches and various ways for counseling to take place. No matter what counseling setting, all psychological counseling is a two-way process that works especially well when client’s and their counselor communicate openly.

Research suggest that counseling effectively decreases depression, anxiety and related symptoms, such as fatigue, nausea and pain. Counseling has also shown to have a positive effect on the body’s immune system. There is overwhelming support that emotional, mental and physical health are very closely linked and that therapeutic counseling can improve a person’s overall health status. Counseling can show a significant change in health related behaviors such as smoking cessation, pain management, weight management, and coping with chronic illness.

What Will My Counseling Sessions Involve?

You will begin by talking to your counselor about what things you would like to be different, and what things are important to change. Your counselor will help you identify what may be contributing to your discouragement, and recommend where to begin making changes. You, with your counselor’s help will identify goals, or what outcomes you want from therapy, and agree on how you’ll know when you are making progress.

Other Considerations To Be Aware Of.

In order to coordinate and improve the care that you receive, your counselor may ask for your permission to speak to your health care provider. This can only be done with your permission. It is important for you to know that everything you discuss in therapy is legally confidential and cannot be released without your specific consent. Your counselor will discuss confidentiality in detail with you before you begin.
